Federal Reserve Reduces Interest Rates for Second Time This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Inflation has risen and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to determine labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was set to publish last month’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release once the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, which he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its inflation report for September that showed that costs are going up, albeit slowly. Prices rose 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
